Approaching aging as an extraordinary part of our life’s journey, allows us to better prepare for the inevitable detours and uncertainty. With strategies that enhance empowerment and resilience, the teachings of yoga can guide us along the path of aging well, by inviting us to consider the boons of not having just a single body, but five interconnected bodies. Referred to as the Koshas (or sheaths) these interconnected bodies include:
• The physical flesh and blood body
• The energetic breathing body
• The thought and emotional mind body
• The wisdom witness body
• The harmonious bliss body
We are dynamic beings, constantly experiencing awareness of our reality and our possibilities within the five integrated layers of the physical, energetic, mind, wisdom and bliss bodies. For instance, by actively focusing on cultivating physical balance we then manifest focused energy and confidence, which in turn strengthens our mind-body consciousness; the very heart and soul of yoga.
Greater physical balance can be achieved with sustained practice!
This proprioceptive training of the brain-body network is a strategy that helps us prepare for easing potential fears of falling. We gain muscular strength, improved posture, stability, increased range of motion and even our breathing becomes more powerful. In turn, our thoughts become more positive and we learn to call upon our wisdom to determine what is best for us as travelers on the continuum of aging well.
