Prenatal Yoga

Pregnancy is a very special and unique time, the beginning of a major life change and journey to becoming a mother. Yoga helps moms-to-be embrace this journey and focus on your body and baby in a deeper way.

Studies have suggested that prenatal yoga can:

  • Reduce anxiety and stress and promote better sleep.
  • Increase the strength, flexibility and endurance of the muscles and joints needed for childbirth.
  • Improve posture and help ease back problems that are common during pregnancy.
  • Expel toxins from the body and improve digestion.
  • Regulate blood pressure and sugar levels in the body.
  • Regulate hormones and emotions, reducing mood swings, nausea and morning sickness.
  • Improve blood circulation and reduce problems of water retention and edema.
  • Promote the connection between moms-to-be and their babies.
  • Classes offer moms-to-be a place to explore the changes in their bodies, free from expectations or pressures.

Alice Bentley, Owner and Director

bentley aliceAlice Bentley, RYT500, has been practicing yoga for 15 years, seriously since her pregnancy with her first child in 2004. On her move to the US from England in 2010 she joined the YogaLife Institute teacher training 200 hour program, with the idea that she wanted "to get better at yoga", what she experienced was life changing and has helped her manage a big transition into a new country and cope with her stressors more effectively. "Yoga helps me be a better mother, wife, daughter and friend, it is my stabilizing force and makes me a nicer person!" Since then she has completed her 200 hour training, 300 hour comprehensive yoga therapy training and 500 hour teacher training and enjoys sharing yoga's transformative power with others. She is passionate about how yoga can help women during pregnancy and motherhood and how yoga can promote healthy weight loss.

Yoga and Cancer

Cancer survivors and caregivers are welcome to participate in these free classes. No yoga experience is necessary and classes are free to all participants newly diagnosed, in cancer treatment or recovery as well as caregivers. Classes will include yoga postures, flowing movements and pranayama (focus on breath) to help students achieve relaxation and mobility in everyday life. Conscious effort to link breath with movement helps relieve tension and helps students gain flexibility and improve strength in the body.

kolodze meredithClass is taught by Meredith Kolodze. Meredith completed her 200 hour training at the Yoga Life Institute in NH. She has also completed the Yoga 4 Cancer Training with Tari Prinster. As an oncology social worker, Meredith believes that caring for the whole person is essential to our health and well being. So often when we are ill, the focus is on medications, and we don't realize that there are many other things that can assist us in living with, or recovering from, cancer. Meredith felt that there was a place for yoga in oncology care and set about finding a way to connect her passions as a social worker and a yogini. She is currently teaching a class for patients at Exeter Hospital through their Cancer Well Fit Program. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, her crazy cairn terrier, Jack, cat, Agave Aphrodite, and five chickens.

Funding for Classes is provided by SATYA. SATYA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. Our mission is to support teachers who are inspired and committed to providing specialized yoga instruction in under-served populations, to provide resources which link qualified instructors to aspiring yogis in a variety of settings with unique considerations, and to honor the many truths of yoga and its power to support the mind, body and spirit in all human beings. Trauma Sensitive Yoga

HAVEN and SATYA (Seacoast Area Teachers of Yoga in Action) have collaborated to offer a unique yoga practice for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Empower Yoga provides the opportunity to practice taking control over your body by making choices about what you feel comfortable doing and not doing in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment without utilizing hands-on physical assists. Discover your inner strength, build confidence and learn coping skills to calm and get present when you need it most. This practice is adaptable to all age groups and levels of physical abilities.

The classes are taught by SATYA instructors Rochelle Jewell, E-RYT (Kripalu Certified Yoga Teacher) and Sarah Sherman, RYT. Both instructors are trained in Trauma Informed Yoga techniques. HAVEN Advocates are present at each class and are available to provide additional support throughout the program.

Classes are free of charge. To learn more please visit the HAVEN website by clicking here.
